Independent healthcare providers

Telling an independent clinic from a chain branch

Most people selling into healthcare want the independents. Working out which is which used to be guesswork.

It is a field, not an inference

The monthly bulk register carries a brand name column that names the operating chain directly. Independence stopped being something you infer from counting locations and became something you read. That matters, because counting was wrong: registering each site as its own partnership makes a national chain look like a row of independents, and naive counting understated one sector's chain share by a third.

The backstops we kept anyway

Shared telephone numbers
A branded site and an apparently independent one answering the same number is the same business.
One person signing for many providers
A single individual named across unrelated providers in different counties is a corporate structure.
Known parent names
Trading names rarely match the group that owns them.
Why the backstops stay
Only the person-based detector generalises to a corporate whose brand you have never heard of.
